Fall Lippies and One New Addition

My stash hasn't changed at all from last year's stash. And sadly despite the claim, I failed to put a dent in them. BUT TIMES -- THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'.

Instead of hoarding and staring at the accrual, I really want to diligently wear all my pretty makeup and delight in them. As a part of that endeavour, I've even taken swatches and shots which I am usually terrible at.

L-R: Revlon Lip Butter Sugar Plum, Fresh Sugar Plum, NARS Fast Ride, Revlon Colorburst Sienna Sparkle, Revlon Colorburst Bordeaux, LORAC Berry Blender.

There's a distinct pattern. I'm a lipstick SISSY and like them to be bold in theory but sheer in execution. I also like the option of them being buildable in case I ever grow some makeup balls.

I'm less shy with the glosses because they tend to apply in thinner, sheerer layers. But lately I'm feeling antsy and slightly bolder. I actually wore Bordeaux to the office the other day. YES. YES, I DID.

And I'm eagerly waiting to meet up with Denise who kindly picked up NARS Amsterdam for me during her trip to NYC. Canadians, did you know that there's a $7 difference between Canadian and American prices for the NARS Pure Mattes? Ontarians, how pained are we at having to pay 13% sales tax on top of that price difference?? I've been paying better attention to the price of things lately, and for some luxury brands like Chanel, there actually isn't that great of a disparity. For middling brands such as Tarte and NARS though? Soooo overpriced in Canada that I can never pay Canadian pricing for them ever again.

If it weren't for the fact that Amsterdam looked perfectly moody and dramatic on me in a way that I never imagined a matte lipstick can look on my undramatic face, I wouldn't have gone there. (Check out Temptalia's review here and see it on Xiao's gorgeous face here.)

So, this is my solemn promise to continue to branch out with my makeup and to work hard to make a dent in the stash I already have. Who's into autumn lips? What are some of your favourite picks and maybe even new picks?

  1. Yes! Please wear your makeup :) You wore Bordeaux? GOLD STAR FOR LIZBOB. *hysterical clapping* So proud! So proud! It looks like a gorgeous color. And I can't wait for you to have Amsterdam. Try a lip swatch, willya? :P

    1. Heeeeeeeeeeeheehee! *proud to have made you proud, if that makes any sense*

My stupid skin will have to behave and stop breaking out if I am to take face swatches. :(

  2. Aaaaaaah you're making me want Bordeaux! And I'm so glad to hear you wore it to work!! YAY! Can't wait to see Amsterdam...

    1. Oooh, I do think Bordeaux will look fabulous on you! I would prefer it to be slightly less glossy as it feels a bit much with the dark colour, but that is what Amsterdam is for, I guess. :)

  3. *applauds enthusiastically* now you just need to start wearing reds! hehe, although I have to say...now I'm lemming Bordeaux. Oh dear. Can't wait for you to get your hands on Amsterdam, I must hear all about it :D

    1. I do think of you quite a bit when I see a red lipstick. Bordeaux would be marvelous on you. DO IT. :D

  4. No need to be a sissy, Liz. If I can wear hot, hot reds, then you can rock Bordeaux and the like without fear or hesitation!
P.S. The price differences is exactly why I buy most of my makeup in the states! It's absurd how much extra we have to pay and the taxes on top?!
    ARGH!!! (ノ`Д ́)ノ

    1. Well, you are a hot little thing and can rock the red no problem. I have to work my way to it in smaller baby steps. :)

I need to cross-border shop more often. :(

  5. Wear it bold and proud!! I have Amsterdam, and don't even wanna talk about how much Australians have to pay for it. Such a great formulation though!

    1. Oh gawd, yeah, I see some of your prices and my head reels back in horror. Which is why what Illamasqua is doing in Aus is so great! Wish other brands would follow suit and do the same in Canada, too.

  6. Awesome post!!! Don't think that I didn't notice the generous swatches of gloss-- working towards Empties, are we?! LOL!!

    1. LOL! Am far, FAR from emptying any of these guys but will do my best! ;)

    2. Lipglosses are tough to empty-- as your Empties post validated.

      Delete
    3. I don't know... I find ALL lippies difficult to empty! I use glosses more than lipsticks though because of my dry lips which is why they tend to appear more in empties posts.

    4. Me too! I did manage to empty two lip balms for my upcoming Empties post, but they had been close to used up for quite a while. I tend to wear more glosses than lipsticks as well, and for some reason I find them very hard to empty!!

    5. TWO - wow!!!

I think it's easy to track a lipstick's progress because we can twist up the tubes, but it's hard to tell when glosses are close to emptying because they still coat the insides of the tubes and look full. :(

      Delete
    6. Yup, two-- but like I said they were close to gone-- so it isn't nearly that impressive. In fact this post has tons of tiny travel size empties and testers. I was determined to use up half used stuff to get rid of it. You have turned me into a thoroughly obsessed Empties collector!

You are totally right about the progress being so much easier to track with lipsticks than with lip glosses-- particularly problematic since we both favor glosses!

  7. I actually laughed out loud at "listick SISSY"....too funny, Liz! What's weird, is that I seem to collect red and richly hued lipsticks WHICH I NEVER WEAR. I even have some hard-to-find-and-stupidly-limited-edition lipsticks THAT I NEVER WEAR, but you've inspired me to break out of my comfort zone! By the way, you think Ontarians have it bad sales tax-wise? Try 15% that us Québecers have to shell out. Makes me sick, I tell you. I stopped buying clothes here (in large part) years ago, and while I try to pick up as much as I can cosmetics-wise whenever I'm in the US, I still cave and pick up many items here too - my impatience will be my ultimate downfall...

    1. Lipstick sissy, not a lipstick bandit. Le sigh. LOL

I salivate a little thinking of your gorgeous, limited edition treasures! Perhaps just tread the waters with one or two shades that you will not mind "ruining" and see what happens. :)

I was on the verge of saying that Ontario was the worst with taxes when I though of poor Quebec and stopped. Ugh, that is horrid, and I know there are a lot of delivery restrictions on shipping to Quebec as well. Retailers have to realize that marking up prices is not the solution to making up for poor sales. :(

  10. Hi Liz, I love fall lip colors. They tend to be a little more deep in colors and the products you're planning to use up are great fall colors. Very berry toned and just perfect for the upcoming season.

    1. Hi, Fannie! I know berry lips are hardly revolutionary come fall, but they come up over and over again precisely due to their moody appeal. Which ones are you enjoying?

  11. I'm loving all those glosses - all great picks!!! Be bold and beautiful Liz, haha :) And - I can't wait to see Amsterdam...Got a feeling 'Lemming Liz' is about to strike at me again...

    1. Lol! I try hard not to be Lemming Liz, but it can't be helped sometimes. Do you have NARS in Australia?

      Delete
    2. Yes we do! It's considered very high end - a brand I often drool over but I need to feel like really spoiling myself to justify buying. I do have Francois Nars latest make up book though and I treasure that!

      Delete
    3. Ugh, I can't imagine AUS's inflated NARS pricing. They're not THAT high end. >:(

  12. I love the Revlon Lip Butter one and the Fresh one you watched. I could do these dark plummy colours if they weren't so pigmented...so plum-coloured balms it is for me...But I hear ya on using pretty makeup. It makes no sense to hoard and stare.

    1. Usually I wear the Fresh Plum so that it's sheer, but yesterday I went full throttle with it and received a lot of compliments on the darker lips. Try it! :)

  13. God, I love autumn lips. :) Amsterdam is truly gorgeous.

MAC Viva Glam I is still my favourite. I wear it all the time, but even more frequently in the fall and winter. I love Camden Chic, too -- still bummed that I couldn't find one for you. :( Oh, and I also love MAC Rebel for when I want a slightly brighter lip in the fall/winter. :)

    1. I really liked one of the Viva Glam lipsticks and even finished it twice in the past! It's insane that I can't remember which one but it's definitely not I. LOL

Thanks again for Amsterdam and no problem on Camden Chic! I wouldn't have known what to do with both anyway. Look at all this stuff I have to finish up this year so that I can buy more next year. ;D

  14. I can't believe how big the difference in pricing is! I don't know if I could buy them at the Canadian price either! Those are some berry dramatic colors, if I do say so myself. Revlon Sugar Plum and Bordeaux are so neglected in my stash; perhaps I should pull them out? I was really wowed by the color of Bordeaux on your swatch!

    1. Haha! You're so cute, I love it so berry much. :D

I didn't like Sugar Plum initially and wished I hadn't picked it up because it appeared too purply and ashy, but now I feel like it's just the thing for the season. Bordeaux is rather scary because of its intensity and high gloss, but I have to admit it's nice to shock and awe once in a while. Give it a go! :)

  15. YAY for wearing Bordeaux, Liz!!! I'm supremely impressed :) I don't know what it is about this year - fall lips are often vampy - but I'm all over wearing deep shades this season too! And as far as a makeup look goes, it's pretty low-key because you want to keep the rest of the face simple. Easy!

The pricing for some of the brands between the US and here is ridiculous. That's why I often order from Neiman's now, because even with the extra fees, it still ends up being cheaper! And in Nova Scotia, our tax is 15% - even more horrible!!!!! It just doesn't make any sense...

    1. Thank you, thank you! I promise to wear something amazingly non-Liz the next time we meet up. :D

I think fall makeup always has me falling for intense shades and classics repeatedly. Loving it all! I have to play up my eyes a bit to balance out the lips, otherwise I look like a pancake with a glob of red, lol. But by playing up the eyes I mean apply a little taupe shadow and some eyeliner. ;)

Oh man, I clearly didn't do my research because I didn't realize tax was that high in NS! INSANITY. I still can't bring myself to pay for the extra charges of delivery and prefer in-store shopping regardless. But yeah, NARS and I are not friends except in the U.S.A. LOL

  16. Oh my goodness, that FRESH set is wonderful! (Your tweet: http://t.co/4jTxQxAU)
My fiancé just asked me if I wanted a knife for my birthday (he just got one for myself). I told him I wanted the FRESH set, having opened your link moments before. XD <-- that's my new favourite emoticon

I am also a Lipstick Sissy. I don't own a single lipstick, but I've discovered gorgeous extremely pigmented "lip balms" that are my kind of "lipstick":
    1) "Bahamas" Vasanti Tinted Lip Balm "Sheer Lip Colour and Conditioner in One" (included in the eBeauty birthday bag, a slightly darker MLBB shade)
    2) "Scarlet" GOSH Soft ‘n Shine Lip Balm (a misnomer; it's a lighter MLBB shade)
    3) “Perfect Plum” GOSH Soft ‘n Shine Lip Balm (gorgeous, in the vein of MAC Sweetie)

All three are incredibly moisturizing and pigmented enough to give me opaque colour but not too pigmented make me feel self-conscious. I discovered the GOSH ones at SDM last week, 50% off. Sadly, I believe they're discontinued, but I managed to find 2 Perfect Plums (one at a Murale) and 1 "Scarlet" (wish I could get a back-up). I don't feel guilty about getting a Perfect Plum backup because it is the most gorgeous fuschia shade and is a pleasure to wear.

I should stop babbling about my lippies... but I must share my joy! I never thought I'd be a lippie girl... I suppose it's a matter of finding the right product. :)

ps For full disclosure on my own lippie inventory, à la Reductionista -- I have 2 other coloured lippies: i) A mix of Burt's Bees Fig Lip Shimmer & B'sB Pink Blossom tinted l/b (I didn't like either on their own, so I mixed 'em and filled up two empty l/b cartridges); and ii) the LMdB GWP “English Garden” lip gloss palette (won in a contest).

pps Liz, I enjoy sharing my inventory stuff with you because I feel like you understand my desire to minimize. Let me know if you consider this "blog-comment hi-jacking". I don't want to start my own blog.

    1. A knife??? Like a kitchen knife or a swiss army knife or a weapon knife or a surgeon's knife? (I carry a tiny x-acto knife in my purse instead of scissors, lol.)

Haha, I don't mind the long comments! I ask questions at the end of my posts to stimulate this sort of conversation in the first place after all. And if anyone understands anxiety regarding wanting to purge/empty yet collect new beauties at the same time, it is me. :)

    2. Thanks, Liz :)

The boy was talking about an all-purpose knife for camping.
He probably thinks that he'll get to use mine if I get one, thus making a 2-in-1 present. (Which is true.) Tee hee. :D

  18. Every single autumn I crave for a perfect plum lips and every single autumn I fail miserably, keep on wearing bleh light colours and looking like sickly pale. But I have made this one promise to myself - I will wear more colours. And I have started already (bright red and electric blue outfit for my wedding afterparty? hell yes!). Now all I need is to do more shopping - how contraproductive for someone who tries to reduce :D Aaaanyway - I love, love, love plum lips on pretty much any picture I see online and I bet NARS Fast Ride paired with either of the two Revlom lip glosses would look stunning on you. And maybe some neutral eye makeup and dramatic black smoked out liner for the night? Can see you totally sporting it.

    1. You go, girl! ;) The wedding afterparty sounds like it was a blast.

I've finally broken out of my natural looking schtick and it's a whole new world! I bet you look awesome in those brighter colours. Let's all just have more fun with our makeup instead of stressing. :))
