March 2013 Pickups and Deliveries

March was a tame month in terms of pickups, as I am now unemployed and can't be buying things anymore. (It's a good time to exercise the "reductionista" part of the brain and get back on track with the blog theme.) But March was also birthday month, and that means gifts!

First up is the Sephora VIB birthday gift. I had the choice of picking up the Fresh lip treatment duo that was offered last year, or this Benefit mascara and highlighter kit. I've wanted to try Watt's Up! for a while, so the choice was easy.

Okay, so I bought one thing but it was only $4.99. It's the Maybelline Vivid Lipstick in Vibrant Mandarin, swatched here.

I'm also making a habit of sampling and testing new things once a month. March was devoted to Hourglass Immaculate Foundation, reviewed here.

And now the gifts!

Many thanks to Ashley, Xiao, my friend Jmeister and my lovely baby sister! I'm lucky to be loved by such wonderful people who know exactly what I like... and are savvy enough to check the wish list. ;-)

I also received some very interesting PR samples this month.

All will be revealed in due course. Reviews will be pouring forth in unstoppable waves, now that I have a lot of free time on my hands!

But the greatest thing I received this month is this homemade card. Remember the ponies?!??

April is going to be amazing, you guys. AMAZING.

  1. Hi Liz, the ponies!! I'm still entranced by Estée Lauder Heat Wave! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on everything here :)

    1. Thanks, Dovey. :) I can't wait to play with everything here! I'm in student mode with papers this week so not much quality makeup time yet - but soon!!

  3. I got the Denyse Beaulieu book and frag sample too! And am shocked that I actually like the perfume and am totally digging the book. I'm nowhere near as fragrance savvy as you so I think that's pretty impressive :)

Yay for birthday treats! I didn't even think to consult the wishlist, I wanted to send you a great coral lippie but was scared it wouldn't be the right shade. I will do better next time! :D

    1. Woo, awesome! It'll be interesting hearing your point of view re: perfume & book. It's a totally subjective experience and I can't wait to read your review! I haven't done perfume reviews in ages but looking forward to getting back into that soon.

And thanks for the birthday coral thought! :)

  4. So many nice things :) very curious as to what's inside the L'Artisan pouch! Just yesterday i tried Tea For Two and thought of you. You'll love it. I may get a full bottle soon :)

    1. I had to google that one since I'm not very well-versed in L'Artisan. I am so curious about it now! Enjoy that bottle when you do. :)

  5. 1) I am also a March birthday, yay! and 2) I just (okay, it was a couple of hours ago) saw a commercial for the spray Vaseline moisturizer. I was highly intrigued because I have all sorts of sensory quirks about moisturizers and the end result is that my skin is dry as dust. I'm interested in your review as this seems like a product that could help me with both my neuroses and my sandpaper-y skin.

    1. Happy belated birthday, Julia! :)

I'm hoping to review that lotion next week - but I've been saying that for a month now. #fail The short review is that the spray lotion is about the same quality as the regular Vaseline lotions. I like my body moisturizers to be very thick and buttery, so this isn't the sort of thing I'd go out of the way to purchase. But I know some people also prefer lightweight lotions and this one is very light!

  6. I adore Watts Up, looking forward to seeing how you go with it. Spray on moisturiser sounds intriguing, that clock is such a cute gimmick! Are those Clinique chubby stick eye tints? Craving a swatch fest of those, waiting until they come out down in Australia is driving me mad. Impressed with the $4.99 Vivid, it costs over $20 AUD!!

    1. I tried Watts Up! once and quite liked it. :)

Yes, Chubby Sticks! I plan on swatching blue and green shadows at some point, so you'll see those popping up again. AND WHAT $20 FOR MAYBELLINE LIPSTICKS??? My god, just tweet one of us and we can send it to you for cheaper than that. SHEESH.

  7. I forgot to pick up my birthday gift from Sephora this year. Oh well.

Happy belated birthday, and I'm excited to see swatches of those Tarte blushes. Is that Natural Beauty? I've had my eye on it!

Also, whoever made you that pony card is a great friend.

    1. LOL! You're really serious about minimizing, huh? I can't resist a free deal. :)

Thanks, and the Tarte blushes are the mini sized ones from the Christmas set. I had Natural Beauty last year but sold it in a blog sale (I don't know why - I was STUPID). It's a great shade and belongs in every blush fiend's collection, so I highly recommend it.

    2. Well, I wasn't really interested in the Benefit set... and I no longer work at the mall, so going to Sephora is a little more involved now. I probably would have chosen the Fresh lip balms from last year because I loved them! But trust me, I'm still swayed by a good deal. Today, I bought butter LONDON's duo set of the cuticle eliminator and the cuticle oil. I really only needed the cuticle eliminator, but it was only $7 to get the set so... Yeah. That happened.

And meep! I hate/love it when someone tells me that something I've had my eye on is amazing and I need it because then I REALLY REALLY need it. Sigh. I want to pick up NYX's Red blush instead because it's cheaper, but Natural Beauty looks so much less scary.

    3. Natural Beauty is great but you can definitely get by with NYX Red, which I also want regardless of how many red blush I already own. You still have to tap lightly and blend a lot with Natural Beauty, so I'd say the effort and result between the two will be quite similar.

    4. Thanks so much for your opinion! I'll definitely pick up NYX Red next time I see it on sale. :)

  8. I had a birthday in March too! Yay for March babies :) Those gifts look amazing - eyeing the Tarte blushes and Clinique shadow sticks especially :) That Benefit set looks so cute - love the mini Watts Up which I've always wanted to try. They're Real is one of my favourite mascaras though the wand can be overly spiky. The Vivids are $16.95 each here :(

    1. Happy belated birthday!!!!!! Yay indeed. :)

I really like mini Benefit things because it's impossible to finish full size ones. The fact that they're free is even better. Unfortunately I've given the mascara away to a friend but I'm VERY picky with mascaras and already have my faves.

I cannot believe the price of makeup in Australia. INSANE.

    1. It's Nomad, good eye, wifey. :D

I squealed like a baby when the highlighter was presented. I kept saying, "No! No! No!" while my hands worked overtime to open that box so I can stare at it and drool. Still haven't been able to bring myself to swatch it even, but I will use it with a lot of love this season. :)

  10. Yayyyy for birthday gifts!!! :D

More yaaaaayyyy for Tarte blushes and Illamasqua Nomad!!!

Good thing you got that Estee Lauder illuminator, it's sold out at a lot of counters now! I'm waiting for MAC's In Extra Dimension collection (which is basically the same texture as that Powder Gelee). :)

And is that an actual functioning clock in that Vaseline PR box?

    1. LOL! Gotta love your enthusiasm for the Tarte blushes. You have these, right?

I was SO tempted to buy Heat Wave but really couldn't. It's too beautiful to use, so it's kind of just sitting on my vanity right now. But I was told to use it and I will, eventually. (Waiting for a nice, leisurely sunny day to swatch and compare.) I've seen a MAC dupe for it on another blog so it's not exactly a must-have, but since I don't have the MAC... :D :D :D

Yeah, the clock works and my sister stole it! lol

    1. Thanks, Jenni. :) I'm certainly not lacking for anything material right now!

I have a funny idea to try to work into a post with those spray lotions and alarm clock, but am not sure that it's going to actually happen. Here's hoping! ;)

    1. Lol! Make a wish list and have your husband point everyone to it. ;)

It's not exactly a secret that I love makeup, so people tend to be on the lookout for it. Either that or I end up with Sephora gift cards which are just as good if not better. :)

It was your birthday? Belated happy birthday!!!
You got some pretty sweet stuff. Really curious about that Estee Lauder luminizer.

Also, Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea is pretty much the perfect summer perfume.

    1. Aww, it's your old Beauty Savvy account. Thanks, Mary! :)

I'm going to do a post on highlighters/luminizers/whats its soon, so you'll see!

This one has Honeysuckle which I love!! Was never a fan of the Green Tea perfumes until this year. So weird how I keep loving things I used to dislike lately.

  21. Aaaah, happy belated birthday, Liz! I also got the Estee Lauder highlighter (had a $20 off coupon, scoooore), and I remember you wanting it so I'm so happy you got it! Isn't it gorgeous?! Though I still really have no idea how to use highlighter, hah. Can't wait to hear about all the goodies :)

    1. Thanks, Amy! Yay, highlighter twins!!!

I feel like liquid highlighters are easier to use, unlike the case w/ blush, but this w is so beautiful that it was near impossible to resist! Truth be told, I haven't worked up the nerve to search it yet.
