NEW from The Body Shop - More Smell Goods

As mentioned in The Body Shop Lip Gloss post, I really appreciate it when brands switch things up and stay true to old favourites while keeping up with the new. To kick off a new spring season, The Body Shop offers a new set of Eau de Toilettes in eight different fragrances: Strawberry, Moringa, Coconut, Mango, Shea, Satsuma, Pink Grapefruit and Vanilla. They sound comfortingly familiar but look sleeker than they used to back in the day.

My sister is still busy dabbing on our vintage Dewberry and Fuzzy Peach Perfume Oils, while I tread forward with the new and asked to review the Shea EDT and Moringa EDT. To be honest, I had doubts about wearing Strawberry or Mango and enjoying them, since I shy away from the overly sugary and fruity type of scents. But I would gladly buy Shea and Moringa scented products from The Body Shop during a good sale and knew I'd enjoy these two scents in a form beyond body butters and shower gels.

MORINGA EDT

I've never smelled a real moringa flower and can't attest to how accurate this scent is in relation to the real thing, but it smells pretty much how you might guess it will, based on the aesthetics of the bottle and packaging: a clean white floral with a side of the stereotypical tropical vibe that isn't too distant from coconut. It's definitely on the feminine side, without coming across too delicate or young. I'd venture to say that it's a safe scent for white floral lovers between the ages of 12 to eternity. I would wear this on brisk walks around the neighbourhood on a spring day when it's still too early to catch whiffs of blooms and a lingering chill fills the air.

Moringa EDT Ingredients:

Alcohol Denat. (Solvent/Diluent), Aqua/Water (Solvent/Diluent), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Benzyl Salicylate (Fragrance Ingredient), Propylene Glycol (Humectant), Geraniol (Fragrance Ingredient), Glycerin (Humectant), Moringa Oleifera Leaf Extract (Skin Conditioning Agent), Sorbitol (Humectant), Eugenol (Fragrance Ingredient), Benzyl Alcohol (Preservative), Denatonium Benzoate (Denaturant)

SHEA EDT

While I like Moringa EDT a lot, Shea is my favourite. It smells just like the body butter version, which I had used a dozen times in the past. It brings back a lot of memory, and best of all, it reminds me of being clean right after a shower. It's a sweet, nutty scent that just stops short of cloying so that I can actually enjoy the sweetness. You can catch a hint of vanilla at its base but it doesn't overpower the toasty nuttiness. I actually wore this to bed the other day when I was too exhausted to take my night shower, and it gave me the feeling of being clean and refreshed even if I really wasn't. (But obviously this is a totally subjective experience, since I directly associate the smell with a post-shower product I relied on for years.) You can also check out my friend Su's review of the Shea EDT here.

Shea EDT Ingredients:

Alcohol Denat. (Solvent/Diluent), Aqua/Water (Solvent/Diluent), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance), Glycerin (Humectant), Linalool (Fragrance Ingredient), Coumarin (Fragrance Ingredient), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone (Fragrance Ingredient), Limonene (Fragrance Ingredient), PEG-75 Shea Butter Glycerides (Skin Conditioning Agent - Emollient), Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract (Natural Additive), Denatonium Benzoate (Denaturant).

Both scents seem strong after the first spritz, but they fade quite quickly and leave the skin with a subtle effect that requires touch-up every hour or two. That's why I appreciate the fact that the bottles are rather small and affordable, at $14 for 30 ml. They're easy to tote around and do not require decanting into atomizers and all that troublesome stuff.

All in all, these are simple, uncomplicated scents that are easy to wear. While I like to delve into niche perfumes and sophisticated and complex scents from time to time, I also enjoy simple and timeless favourites that make me feel good, the way that a soft white cotton T-shirt and an old worn-in pair of jeans might do. I might even have to check out Vanilla and Coconut at the store next time!

The Body Shop Eau de Toilette range is now available in-store and online.

    1. LOL @ literally bathing

I might have to get the Shea body butter again even though I have ten thousand other body stuff to wade through. Have fun shopping! :)

  2. I used to use Vanilla in middle school -- I think it would start off smelling like cough syrup but it would eventually settle into something soooo vanilla-y and perfect. Or I just couldn't accurately smell myself after a while. One or the other =P

    1. I know a lot of people liked Vanilla... and that went through so many transitions that I didn't bother to keep up with it. Laughing at the cough syrup part - these start off in an alcohol-ish haze but settle down so nicely that you can forgive the initial spray.

  3. Oooh wifey, I JUST smelled the Moringa body butter a few days ago and WOW I am in love!!! Now to hear they have bottled up the scent? I am all over that! I have not actively lusted for ANYTHING from TBS for years, let alone a fragrance (I am kinda judgy in that way but only because I just remember those godawful body sprays from back in middle school/high school), but this has definitely caught my eye! :D

    1. It took me a long time to get over the judgy thing myself! But once they started rolling out new things, I couldn't help but get curious. Now I'd say the store is half full of things I want to try vs. things I will stay away from forever, lol. Try the Moringa at the store and see if you like! :)

  5. I sniffed these in store a couple weeks ago. I really like the Moringa and Satsuma. I have the Moringa dry body oil and I really like it. :) I also have the Shea body butter, but I haven't started it yet.

    1. I was going to get the body oil at some point as well. :) Love it when they do BOGOs!

  6. I like subtle scents sometimes - they're perfect for just a hint of something wonderful, and they also layer for interesting combinations. I like a little bit of coconut but not A LOT OF COCONUT so that does sound appealing.

    1. I have to warn you that it's anything but subtle upon the first spray. Then it dies kind of suddenly and then it's subtle for the next hour. Test it first!

  8. Lovely review. I especially liked the sentence about white T-shirt and jeans. And that is what all of us need from time to time - a little black dress and a pair of killer red heels can be awesome, but coziness and comfort is equally important.

    1. That's exactly what I meant. :) I don't think everything has to be so high end and complex all the time to be enjoyed.

  11. Oh, I haven't walked into a Body Shop for ages! I love their Moroccan Rose shower gel. I have to give this a whiff. I'm curious about Moringa EDT. I like subtle flowery scents that aren't sweet :-)

  12. Oh, man, I wore White Musk and Oceanus all throughout middle school!!! SO GOOD. I wonder if they make those anymore. They were big sellers back in the day...

    1. OCEANUS!!!!!!!!!! Man, I loved that! That's the only one they haven't brought back ever again. >:( White Musk is around in a reincarnated form. Not sure if it smells the same as the older version since I was never into it.

  13. Oooh, I like the sound of the pink grapefruit! I was contemplating buying the body mist of it when it was released, but the staying power of the fragrance was next to zero so I resisted. But might have to check out the EDT. I wish they'd release a Vineyard Peach one because I'm obsessed with the shower gel. Though no doubt if these do hit Australian shores it's not going to be $14, more like $35 lol.

    1. I've never used a body mist in my life. And I'm a bit iffy on EDTs in general, but these are affordable so I can't complain. Ugh, the AUS pricing makes me angry when I hear about it. So unfair.

  14. Denise mentioned Oceanus - I was allllll about that scent in middle and high school. I still had a bar of Oceanus soap in my delicates drawer but tossed it when I moved a few years ago.

I usually go for their fruity scents but I have the body oil in olive and I like the smell. It would make a nice linen spray.

    1. We should petition to bring Oceanus back. I'd buy it!

I'm not enamoured of the Olive scent though I love eating real olives. I also want their Aloe and Vitamin E body butters for no apparent reason other than the fact that I am greedy as all get out.

  15. oh the pain of EDTs!!! Moringa smells nice according to my memory at the body shop! But you know ;) i'm a fan of White Musk scent from TBS!

(i recently gave Jo Malone Earl Grey & cucumber a sniff and loved the earl grey scent! can't bring myself to part with the wallet though - because an EDT is an EDT! even after layering...)

    1. I didn't realize how popular White Musk is/was! It's back now in a new form, so you might want to check it out. :)

I'm on the fence about JM Earl Grey as well. Maybe if I manage to finish or get rid of a few other bottles first...!
