Intro to Clarins Lipsticks

This post features press samples.

Pssssssssst... do you like lipsticks? I know I do, and I know some of you are downright obsessed with collecting as many as possible. While I'm a big fan of Clarins skincare, I haven't had too many brushes with Clarins makeup. That changed a little while ago when I was given the opportunity to test drive five different lipsticks from Clarins.

Clarins has four different lipstick types:
  • Rouge Eclat (Satin Finish Age-Defying Lipstick), CAD$27
  • Joli Rouge Brilliant (Perfect Shine Sheer Lipstick), CAD$27
  • Joli Rouge (Long-Wearing Moisturizing Lipstick), CAD$27
  • Rouge Prodige (True-Hold Colour & Shine Lipstick), CAD$27

As you can tell by the description, there are slight variances across the board and each type is packaged differently. I really like the appearance of the gold square tubes and think that the rounded tubes, while immediately identifiable as classic Clarins lipsticks, are in need of a design upgrade to make them stand out some more in today's competitive lipstick market. Because when it comes to the product inside the tubes, Clarins is one of the best.

Rouge Éclat in 09 Juicy Clementine - I think that the Rouge Éclat formula is my favourite of the bunch. My opinion of it hasn't changed since reviewing Pink Fuchsia. It's amazingly comfortable to wear, feels weightless and looks opaque and vibrant.

Joli Rouge Brilliant in 04 Praline - Alternately called "Perfect Shine Sheer Lipstick," it really is sheer and imparts high shine on the lips without looking goopy or glossy.

Joli Rouge in 738 Royal Plum - Don't be scared by how dark it looks in the tube! This is the shade that was being promoted in the Clarins Fall 2013 displays, and it provides just the right amount of drama and attitude.

Joli Rouge in 716 Clarins Red - If you're looking for a holiday red, this totally needs to be considered. It's classic French chicness in the form of a hydrating lipstick that would look amazing with metallic eyes.

Rouge Prodige in 127 Redwood - Rouge Prodige is like a mixture of the previous three types, delivering shine, hydration and slightly sheerer but still vibrant colour, all in one. I would have worn the hell out of these Prodiges early on in my lipstick journey had I known how comfortable they are!

Swatches! See, I told you Royal Plum isn't scary.

In case this wasn't enough lipstick for you, I added Pink Fuchsia to the party. :-)

One thing you may have noticed about these Clarins lipsticks is that they all claim hydration and shine. Joli Rouge is the closest to a classic satin-finish lipstick that delivers high impact and wearability. Joli Rouge Brilliant is its younger sister, for those graduating from lip glosses to lipsticks without diving fully into the world of opaque colours. And Rouge Éclat and Rouge Prodige are contemporary formulas that provide weightless coverage and glide in both everyday neutrals and standout vibrant shades. I find them all super easy to wear, even with seasonal dryness, and the subtle fruity scent adds to the decadent and pampered feeling.

Is there anything sexier than a brand new tube of lipstick? Ugh, I can't deal with all this awesomeness. I know that I've been giving a lot of raves lately, but it's only the simple truth. You need a Clarins lipstick, and you need one now.

Available online at Clarins.ca and your local Clarins counter.

  1. I still like Pink Fuchsia the most, but the red is gorgeous as well! Got to check these out at the Clarins counter soon :)

  2. When I was at the Clarins Event here in Edmonton, the regional trainer told me that one time a lady walked up to the counter and asked how many Clarins Red lipsticks they had. She bought all nine of them, because she was an opera singer and that was the only red lipstick she wore on stage since it's such a true red!

    1. I chose a shade that was particularly invisible... Now I have to test the others at a counter. :) Pink Fuchsia would look great on you!

  5. Oh man, I looooved Royal Plum in the promo ads. What a fantastic fall color! Now I want to try the Rouge Eclats––lightweight and pigmented is totally my jam. Excuse me while I go window shop the hell out of the internet...thanks for sharing, Liz :)

  7. Me? Need another lipstick? Say it isn't so! :p

From your arm swatch, Juicy Clementine is calling to me. I like how you have such a variety of shades :) Thanks for the helpful breakdown of the different lipsticks Clarins makes and the finish differences - handy reference should I ever crack.

    1. I think you should crack and definitely consider Juicy Clementine now that it's summery over there! ;)

Haha, just kidding. These are all permanent and are always around, should you ever need a quality treat.

  8. Royal Plum is so so pretty! I have my eye on the new Maybelline Colour elixir which looks to be a similar shade to this - think I am in fall mode while we are in summer weather, darn it!

  9. I Love Clarins lipsticks, find them to be very moisturizing and they never make my lips peel. That said they have some lip balms with transparent part outer and color inside, I hated those, LOL, almost impossible to apply at the right spot ;-)

    1. Oh yeah, I'm not sure what's up with those. I'm never drawn to those two-phase lipsticks, be it Clarins or any other brand. Seems messy.

  10. Ooooh, Redwood is seriously calling my name. I don't actually have anything like it in my (admittedly large) collection, either.

The one Clarins lipstick I have has an incredible formula - it's the summer LE kind with the clear outside and the core colour.

    1. Redwood's a great everyday shade. :)

I dislike those summer LEs but good to know you enjoy them! Is it because they're very moisturizing?

    2. Moisturizing, and I really like the packaging - the oval shape and the weight of it appeal to me. Plus they smell like popsicles.

  12. I have never tried a Clarins lipstick, but this post has made me intrigued with the Rouge Eclat formula! Pink Fuchsia and Juicy Clementine would be so perfect for summer. I really should do some swatching next time I'm passing by the counter...

    1. Yup - looking at those shades makes me miss summer SO MUCH. May I suggest adding them to your shopping basket during the next Shoppers redemption event? ;D

  13. Ok, I really want to try Clarins's lipsticks right now! I'm absolutely in love with Redwood.
p.s. I know you probably haven't even noticed but I'm so sorry I can't comment your posts during the week, my Milan connection kind of sucks. I hate not commenting straight away because I love your posts! x

    1. It's a lovely everyday shade! Perfect for any occasion. :)

Never worry about being able to comment! We all have busy lives. I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me this though, sucky connection and all. I hope that improves, for your sake, not mine. I had some technical/internet troubles myself this week, so I understand it can be soooo frustrating!

  14. I feel like I've never looked at Clarin's lipsticks because 1. not all of the clarins people here sell clarins makeup (some just sell skincare, i think?) and 2. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY LIPSTICK FORMULAS? Hahahahaha. I think I've always been like "ooh that's pretty" when I see one on a blog, but then later on I'm like "what formula was that? What did the bullet look like? Did it have a name? /flails" and then I go to the Dior counter instead. :X

    1. I don't know about down there, but Sephora stores only carry select Clarins skin and body care items and no makeup. But all the regular Clarins counters at department stores are fully stocked with both skincare and makeup.
